In Charlotte at the Light Factory, the annual Member’s Show is opening this Saturday July, 11th from 6-9pm. It should be a good show and you can see some of my work there too. Can’t beat that.

July 10, 2009 by Scott Lessing HubenerA moment’s gesture
July 9, 2009 by Scott Lessing HubenerIts always interesting to find that little bit of luck you sometimes get when making a photo. That decisive moment, or fortuitous gesture that brings it all together. That is part of the magic and intrigue of photography. Things can just come together for that one instant, and if you’re there and ready, you can capture it.

Portrait of Stephany
July 6, 2009 by Scott Lessing HubenerA month or so ago I photographed Stephany at her home. She worked with me for the afternoon allowing me to make some portraits. There were several places in her house that we used for settings. The kitchen had this great wallpaper that was so dated, but full of character. The house had this cool living room, too, with great window light and a couch and paint color that rocked. Then we also took some pictures in her room, which is the photograph below. It was the last room I saw and on my first impression the least favorite setting. However, the picture that I took there is probably my favorite from the entire afternoon. The other settings did work well, and produced some nice portraits, but the shot of Stephany looking out the window seemed to have so much more working for it.
Originally I thought the sparseness of the other rooms may have worked better for making a successful image, but the bedroom with its more cluttered appearance really adds a dimension that was lacking in the other photos. Also, the colors with the flash seem to grab the viewers attention. Lastly, the pose of her on the futon and looking out the window adds an element of mystery.

More Wrestling
July 1, 2009 by Scott Lessing HubenerI’m working on getting together a slideshow of the wrestling I’ve been to over the last couple weeks. Last weekend I got some audio to go with the photography and I’m editing the audio now to add to the slideshow. Once I’ve gotten it completed I’ll post the entire slideshow. There are just so many photos that are worthy of the matches and I want to do justice to the whole experience, both visually and the auditory theatrics and pummelings that go into it.
One of the photos that I really love is this one below of the ref “finding” some contraband brass knuckles on one of the wrestlers and scorning him for attempting to bring it into the ring.

Don’t take my Kodachrome away
June 23, 2009 by Scott Lessing HubenerAs Paul Simon lamented, please don’t take my Kodachrome away. Yet, it is going to be discontinued after 74 years. I know that films have come and gone, but there is something sad about the end of an era. It seems more like the nail in the coffin of film and only a matter of time before it is obsolete. Last year saw the loss of Polaroid and now Kodachrome.
Kodak has a page memorializing the legendary film on their website. Films obviously don’t make the photographs, but as any photographer who has shot Kodachrome can tell you, there is something special in the film and it is the benchmark by which all other slide films are compared. Since I have a Nikon;
I got a Nikon camera
I love to take a photograph
So mama don’t take my Kodachrome away

Back to working on my 19/23 highway project. The photography series of food I’ve been working on is almost done, and there are some events coming up that I can incorporate into the 19/23 work, including documenting a wrestling series! There are other activities that I need to fit into this project so I’ve been making some lists and examining “holes” in the work.
This photo was taken the yesterday and was one of my favorites from the roll. I saw the scene and went to set up the camera but then hesitated. I almost didn’t take the shot but then pressed the shutter. The image came out as well or maybe even a little better than I guessed it would.

It Was 20 Years Ago Today
June 4, 2009 by Scott Lessing HubenerA pic of the mysterious Tank Man. Lens Blog has a good story from the various photographers who captured the photo. Apparently, there is still uncertainty to the man’s identity and fate. Of course China isn’t talking. They are also interfering and attempting to disrupt any international coverage taking place now to commemorate the event by blocking shots in Tianamen Square.

Anyone for Tennis?
June 2, 2009 by Scott Lessing HubenerRecently, I’ve had the opportunity to work some more on my documentary of the region along the 19/23 highway. The work comes easier at some times than others. There is enough completed now to present in a show and I’m considering submitting the work for various exhibitions, however the thought of paying for prints and frames at this time doesn’t sit very well. So maybe I will just put that off until its completed.
Later this month I’m going to be working on my first video short. I’m in the process of building a crew and cast but its coming together quickly. I guess in a week or two I’ll begin the pre-production and then shoot the sucka. I will be incorporating more multimedia and video into my work and I feel very enthusiastic about the new opportunities. These are exciting times.

Food
May 28, 2009 by Scott Lessing HubenerMore food shots for my 30 Photos in 60 Days project. I’ve gotten about half of them done and still have about another 30 days left, so I’m right on schedule.
