Traveling in Colombia

By Scott Lessing Hubener

In April of 2007 I was fortunate enought to travel to Colombia, SA. Over the course of a week, I explored Bogota and Cali. It proved to be a challenging place to make photos.  It wasn’t the FARC or paramilitaries that made it difficult, I was in cities the whole time so that wasn’t an issue, but it was simply looking like a tourist with a camera that made me stand out. On my second day in Bogota, I was detained by the police and led a block to the closest precinct. Fortunately, they didn’t want a bribe, rather just to inform me I was in a dangerous neighborhood.  That set the tone and I was much more on my guard from then on.

It took a few months, but finally I got the photos printed in book. Shutterfly does good job of personal book printing. Most of the images made were in color, but some were made on a Leica M3 using black and white film. The book contains 30 color plates of which I plan to show in a gallery at some point.
