Landscapes

March 31, 2008

While traveling this past weekend I saw lots of blooming redbuds and interesting landscapes. The variety of colors the begin to show up in the spring landscape range from subtle to vibrant.  Some areas still had a floor of fall leaves.

Some of the interesting sites I found were just along highways, but also going into some state parks I found to be really interesting. I’ve enjoyed a lot of the featured photographers on Tim Atherton’s site. He also has some really good landscape images as well. But be sure to view his Immersive Landscapes series. There is some really good stuff in there. Just explore all of his stuff while you’re there. The guy is good, really good.

Day in Knoxville

March 26, 2008

Went to Knoxville last week for a day. I took my boxer dog, Sadie along with me. She was probably just bored driving around with me, but she at least kept me company. She let me take some photos of her too. Its sometimes nice to have that companion along with you. Anyway, as I travel its been interesting to get photos of the different hotel rooms I stay in. The most interesting feature seems to usually be the curtains. Probably a couple decades ago it would have been the wallpaper.

Floating around on some blog I can’t recall, was a recent post about a series of hotel/motel rooms a photogrpaher documented alongs their travels. The result seemed pretty cool, now I just can’t remember where I saw it.

New Marketing Campaign

March 25, 2008

I’m creating a new email and print mail marketing piece. Its been a difficult process as choosing promotional images has never been easy for me. It seems I’m either too attached to a photo or am unable to distance myself enough to be objective. Looking through PDN’s self promo awards has given me some inspiration. And I look to Burns Auto Parts for some of that can-do attitude, as well as a lot of invaluable information.

Yee-Haw

March 22, 2008

The guys over at Yee-Haw Industries let me drop by and spend the afternoon documenting their work. I was in Knoxville finishing some work for a book proposal I’m finishing up. I had heard many great things about Yee-Haw from various designers and graphic artists and stumbled upon them while downtown.

Kevin, the principal and one of the printers was gracious enough to give me a tour and learn about their operation. Their work is just amazing. I loved reading on their site about Kevin’s view of computers as the “devil’s work”. The hand’s on work they do can only come from physical contact with the medium, it is so apparent when you see their work. Check them out here.

Keeping Polaroid Alive

March 21, 2008

Well, since Polaroid is about to shut down, I’ve got to keep it going with them, as it may be the coming to and end :( I’ve added a link on the blogroll to the Save Polaroid Blog. Its a sad reality, but at least they are trying to do something. They have petitions linked there for visitors to sign and nostalgia for reminiscing.

Robert Johnson

March 17, 2008

Today I met and photographed Robert Johnson for the artist profile section of WNC Magazine. Meeting and talking with artists is very stimulating. Robert lives at the foothills of Mt. Mitchell and his home literally backs up to the edge of a National Forest. His studio was tucked in the woods right next to his house and as I traveled down his unpaved road, I startled some deer who were milling about. It seems some people have it all figured out and makes me wonder what’s wrong with the rest of us.

Robert’s art is very calming and reflective. His paintings depict various natural landscapes. I found his art to be very reflective of his personality: very calming and peaceful. My personal favorite works of his are his notebook sketches. He was working on one while I was there. They are just absolutely beautiful works of art.

There’s Something in the Air

March 17, 2008

Seems that this weekend brought the feel for spring. Nice weather is here and hopefully to stay. The trees and plants are beginning to bloom. The ubiquitous return of the lawn and garden tools must be some kind of signal too.

And with the new season comes the spring cleaning, the sense of renewal.  I am preparing the rollout of a completely new website. A new look, a new design, new branding, a new feel.  The ball is now in motion and its just a matter of seeing it through. Keep an eye out, more to come as it wraps up.

The Clay Space

March 13, 2008

Some recent photos from the River Arts District at the Clay Space. In early April the show of River Arts District Photos will be opening in the Mayor’s Office of City Hall in Asheville. The offices are located on the second floor. This show replaces the previous one entitled E-Asheville, which was a profile of the city.  The photographers in the new show are Reggie Tidwell, Michael Mauney, Paul Jackson, Bill McMannis, Katie Damien, Frank Bott  and myself.

Sze Tsung

March 12, 2008

Sze Tsung’s work strikes me as quiet and poetic.  His work is represented by Yossi Milo. From his site,

Sze Tsung LEONG (American and British, born Mexico City 1970) is a photographer and painter based in New York. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the International Center of Photography, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, among others. In 2006, twenty-two pieces from his “History Images” series were shown as one of four monographic exhibitions at the High Museum of Art. His work has also been shown in exhibitions including “Landscape: Recent Acquisitions” at MoMA, the 2006 Havana Biennial, the 2004 Taipei Biennial, and “Painting as Paradox” at Artists Space. In 2005, he received a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship. History Images, his first monograph, was published by Steidl in 2006. His work is represented by Yossi Milo Gallery in New York.

This is Shit

March 12, 2008

I just couldn’t resist that title for these images of cow manure by Philippe Gronon. One of my favorites has to be the one with the steam rising off of it. Philippe will have a show coming up at Yossi Milo, though I see no indication yet of what the exhibited works will be. Anyway by looking at his work, it should be interesting.

Contributor Profile in WNC Magazine

March 9, 2008

I was a featured contributor in the current issue of WNC magazine.  They called and did a little interview and ran a photo and paragraph about me, which I appreciated. The publication just celebrated its one year anniversary with a party full of advertisers, contributors, businesses and other civic and creatives from around the region.

Below are two tears heets from the issue.  The first story is about the local artist, Nava Lubelski, which I photographed a few months ago for the assignment and previously posted. As well, there is a landscape image that runs in the “Vistas” section.

PDN 30

March 6, 2008

PDN has announced their Top 30 emerging photographers. There were quite a few familiar names on the list as well as some that are new to me. The PDN 30 use to be the 30 under 30 and while there is no longer the age restriction, most are in their 20s or early 30s.

Passing Storm

March 5, 2008

Tonight’s sunset was so unusual.  After a day of storms and tornado warnings, a break. The sun shines through and illuminates the entire sky. The warm glow bounced down onto us, giving the earth a supernatural glow. It was a fantastic sight, so beautiful. How nice it is to experience, makes you remember that things are good and to enjoy the gifts.
