Don’t take my Kodachrome away

June 23, 2009

As Paul Simon lamented, please don’t take my Kodachrome away. Yet, it is going to be discontinued after 74  years. I know that films have come and gone, but there is something sad about the end of an era. It seems more like the nail in the coffin of film and only a matter of time before it is obsolete. Last year saw the loss of Polaroid and now Kodachrome.

Kodak has a page memorializing the legendary film on their website. Films obviously don’t make the photographs, but as any photographer who has shot Kodachrome can tell you, there is something special in the film and it is the benchmark by which all other slide films are compared. Since I have a Nikon;

I got a Nikon camera
I love to take a photograph
So mama don’t take my Kodachrome away

Portrait of Hayes taken last week up in Barnardsville.  I spent a couple hours up there and photographed the community.

Back to working on my 19/23 highway project. The photography series of food I’ve been working on is almost done, and there are some events coming up that I can incorporate into the 19/23 work, including documenting a wrestling series! There are other activities that I need to fit into this project so I’ve been making some lists and examining “holes” in the work.

This photo was taken the yesterday and was one of my favorites from the roll. I saw the scene and went to set up the camera but then hesitated. I almost didn’t take the shot but then pressed the shutter. The image came out as well or maybe even a little better than I guessed it would.

It Was 20 Years Ago Today

A pic of the mysterious Tank Man. Lens Blog has a good story from the various photographers who captured the photo.  Apparently, there is still uncertainty to the man’s identity and fate. Of course China isn’t talking. They are also interfering and attempting to disrupt any international coverage taking place now to commemorate the event by blocking shots in Tianamen Square.

Anyone for Tennis?

June 2, 2009

Recently, I’ve had the opportunity to work some more on my documentary of the region along the 19/23 highway. The work comes easier at some times than others. There is enough completed now to present in a show and I’m considering submitting the work for various exhibitions, however the thought of paying for prints and frames at this time doesn’t sit very well. So maybe I will just put that off until its completed.

Later this month I’m going to be working on my first video short. I’m in the process of building a crew and cast but its coming together quickly. I guess in a week or two I’ll begin the pre-production and then shoot the sucka. I will be incorporating more multimedia and video into my work and I feel very enthusiastic about the new opportunities. These are exciting times.
