Some of Bele Chere

July 25, 2009

So I did go to Bele Chere for most of the day yesterday. There were some good bands playing, and with the event being smaller this year it was a bit more tolerable. I took my Leica and my last roll of Kodachrome. Over the last month I’ve shot five of the final rolls of the stuff before it is discontinued later this year. The bright colors of a festival seem well suited to being shot on Kodachrome. I’ve still got about half of a roll left to finish off sometime so there is some pressure as to what to put on those final frames.

While the film still has to be developed, I did manage to take some photos with my other camera. There are always a few surprises when photographing a large event or on the streets; you never know what you’ll see and that’s what makes it so exciting and challenging. This one below was my hands down favorite.

In the evening, I spent some time with some of the Mountain Xpress folks and took a couple portraits of Jon and Jon.

House

July 22, 2009

Last week I visited my mom and family in Florida.  Their beach house is approx 1,000 years old and filled with intersting things that I hope nobody would use to decorate a non-vacation home.

Apparently Staged

July 17, 2009

Say it ain’t so!  Its been debated for sometime, but this looks pretty definitive. Apparently the Robert Capa iconic Spanich Civil War photo was staged. Ugh.

Light Factory Member’s Show

July 10, 2009

In Charlotte at the Light Factory, the annual Member’s Show is opening this Saturday July, 11th from 6-9pm. It should be a good show and you can see some of my work there too.  Can’t beat that.

A moment’s gesture

July 9, 2009

Its always interesting to find that little bit of luck you sometimes get when making a photo. That decisive moment, or fortuitous gesture that brings it all together. That is part of the magic and intrigue of photography. Things can just come together for that one instant, and if you’re there and ready, you can capture it.

Portrait of Stephany

July 6, 2009

A month or so ago I photographed Stephany at her home. She worked with me for the afternoon allowing me to make some portraits. There were several places in her house that we used for settings. The kitchen had this great wallpaper that was so dated, but full of character. The house had this cool living room, too, with great window light and a couch and paint color that rocked. Then we also took some pictures in her room, which is the photograph below. It was the last room I saw and on my first impression the least favorite setting. However, the picture that I took there is probably my favorite from the entire afternoon. The other settings did work well, and produced some nice portraits, but the shot of Stephany looking out the window seemed to have so much more working for it.

Originally I thought the sparseness of the other rooms may have worked better for making a successful image, but the bedroom with its more cluttered appearance really adds a dimension that was lacking in the other photos. Also, the colors with the flash seem to grab the viewers attention. Lastly, the pose of her on the futon and looking out the window adds an element of mystery.

More Wrestling

July 1, 2009

I’m working on getting together a slideshow of the wrestling I’ve been to over the last couple weeks. Last weekend I got some audio to go with the photography and I’m editing the audio now to add to the slideshow. Once I’ve gotten it completed I’ll post the entire slideshow. There are just so many photos that are worthy of the matches and I want to do justice to the whole experience, both visually and the auditory theatrics and pummelings that go into it.

One of the photos that I really love is this one below of the ref “finding” some contraband brass knuckles on one of the wrestlers and scorning him for attempting to bring it into the ring.
